Woodpeckers are fascinating birds with a variety of unique traits. For example:
- They have a hyoid bone that starts at the nostril and wraps around their entire skull to the back of their head. Why? To protect them from getting headaches when they peck at the trees, it acts like a buffer.
- They prefer dead or dying trees for nesting and feeding. The softer wood is usually full of insects and is easier to hollow out.
- You can quite often see them feeding at hummingbird feeders as they love the sweet taste.
- A group of woodpeckers are called a “descent.” Probably because they start at the top of trees and then work their way down.
- They have long tongues which allow them to reach deep inside crevices for insects.
- There are over three hundred species of woodpeckers in the world except for in New Guinea and Australia. You will find an abundance of them in South America and Southeast Asia.
These are just a few highlights of the remarkable features that make woodpeckers stand out in the avian world. Their adaptations and behaviors are perfectly suited to their lifestyle, making them one of nature’s skilled craftsmen.
