When Will I Be Pretty

A watercolour pep talk from me to you.

This soft watercolour painting started with a question I’ve asked myself more times than I care to admit: When will I be pretty? Not just in the mirror sense, but in the “when will I feel like I’ve arrived?” kind of way. You know—when will I be enough, shiny, butterfly-level impressive?

So I painted a caterpillar asking a butterfly that very question. And the butterfly, bless her wings, doesn’t roll her eyes or give a lecture. She just exists. Beautifully. Quietly. As proof that change is coming.

I love how this piece turned out—lush greens, soft textures, and a warm moment shared between two creatures at different points in their journey. It’s cute and heart-warming, created for visual pleasure, but also to make a point.

So here’s the real truth behind it: I created this for anyone who’s still in their caterpillar phase. Still growing. Still inching forward. Still wondering if they’re doing it right. If that’s you, I see you. And I promise—you’re not behind. You’re becoming.

This watercolor is a reminder that transformation isn’t instant. It’s messy and slow and sometimes feels like nothing’s happening. But it is. You’re changing. You’re evolving. And one day, you’ll look back and realize you were pretty all along—just in your own way.

So hang this artwork somewhere you’ll see it often. Let it nudge you gently on those tough days. Let it celebrate you on the good ones. And if you ever find yourself asking, “When will I be pretty?”—remember: even the butterfly had to inch along or a while

This is so true Pennie and such a cute painting I love it. I really relate to the line.. “And one day, you will look back and realize you were pretty all along, just in your own way”. It’s a shame it takes getting older to actually realize this. I’m following!
