I’m a Brit, and I bought my first car when I was 19—and yes, you guessed it, it was a Morris Minor 1000. Affectionately known as a Moggy Thou, it was my pride and joy. I was so excited to finally own my own car, but that euphoria was short-lived. Just six weeks later, my beloved new ride was stolen, never to be seen again.
When I bought it in 1985, the Morris Minor was already considered vintage as its production ended in 1971. I bought it because it was still in mint condition, so naturally it was pure chocolate-coated candy to a thief.
In 1987 I emigrated to Canada, and many years later, while visiting my parents back in Old Blighty, I couldn’t believe my eyes. There it was: a beautiful Moggy Thou parked in their neighbour’s driveway. It was the mirror image of my first car—same colour, perfect rounded chrome fenders—sitting there, posing like it knew exactly how attractive it was.
Drooling, I snapped a photo, knowing it would end up in my creative queue. But it took a while to figure out how I wanted to treat it. I didn’t want to over-edit or stylize it into oblivion. The car already had character; my job was just to frame it right and showcase its history—hence the inclusion of the Morris Motors emblem.
So I leaned into the nostalgia. I cleaned up the surrounding area but left the Moggy pretty much as it was. You can still see where the paint’s been touched up and the few small patches of rust—but that’s part of its charm. I adjusted the contrast and lighting, but let the car speak for itself. It’s printed on archival paper with inks that won’t fade, because if anything deserves to be preserved, it’s a car that helped Britain hit the million-unit milestone and still manages to look proud about it.
Fun fact: Alec Issigonis, the designer behind the Morris Minor, also created the Mini. Clearly, the man had a talent for compact charm.
This print is for anyone who’s ever named their car, admired a chrome bumper, or felt irrational joy at the sight of a well-preserved classic. It’s a little piece of automotive memorabilia, and I loved bringing it to life.
