This is my re-creation of a children’s book Public Domain image by Randolph Caldecott, who was an illustrator and artist from the 19th century. He was a well-known children’s book illustrator and typically his books cost a shilling a piece. The image is called “And the Dish Ran Away with the Spoon,” which was based on the nursery rhyme, Hey Diddle Diddle, which I assume most people are familiar with. Caldecott illustrated many children’s books and nursery rhymes, even though he died at the young age of 39, due to bad health relating to a childhood condition.
Here is the original image by Caldecott for comparison, plus I created a modern minimalistic artwork which I call ‘After Dinner Walk’, which was inspired by this image too.
Many of the old, well-loved, nursery rhymes are said to be based on historic events. Mary Mary Quite Contrary is said to be about the homicidal nature of Queen Mary I of England a.k.a. Bloody Mary. Hey Diddle Diddle, doesn’t have much folklore that I could find, except for referencing some clandestine affairs during the Henry VIII era. It’s thought that Ring Around the Rosie was about the bubonic plague, with the name referring to the rash that appeared on the skin of those infected. The “ashes, ashes” referenced the funeral pyres of the bodies that were burned. However, how much of this is true? Who really knows. They say Ring Around the Rosie, in its original version wasn’t seen in print until the 1800s, which was long after the plague. But could it be possible that the song was sang, before the words ever found their way onto paper? It will always be a mystery, I guess.
